Count the cost of careless driving

MAKE no mistake, road crashes cost Queensland a lot.

But forget for just a moment the families torn apart by the loss of a loved one.

The financial burden of road trauma costs Queensland more than the combined Australia-wide health care system cost of cancer and obesity, according to the state’s Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety.

CARRS-Q estimates Queenslanders spend more than $4.11 billion in the clean-up.

It is further estimated the cost, including medical treatment, legal battles and loss of household labour, sits at $2.3 billion per year.

Vehicles costs including towing and repairs reach $1.13 billion and general costs including travel delays, fire and emergency services sit at $682 million.

QUT researcher Dr Mark King said the information was difficult to compile because of the availability of data.

Serious injury trauma costs the most.

In 2008, these collisions cost $1.96 billion which came in higher than fatals ($800m) minor injury ($680m) and property damage ($687m).
