Councillor calls on state MPs to fight for light rail
THE Coast's state MPs have been called upon to fight for a light rail project regarded by residents as the region's most important.
Cr Christian Dickson made the call as Sunshine Coast Council adopted its Integrated Transport Strategy.
He said he was delighted to see last week's Sunshine Coast Daily story which used ReachTel polling to ask residents what they thought was the region's most important project.
Light rail was at the top of the list.
Cr Dickson called on state members for a firm commitment to deliver light rail.
"We need a proper light rail transport system yesterday," Cr Dickson said.
He said it couldn't happen without the support of state members.
"The light rail project is the most important for the Sunshine Coast right now."
Should light rail be the Coast's rapid transport solution?
This poll ended on 11 January 2019.
We need more access roads.
Better public transport in general.
This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the region's state members were committed to rapid transport for the Coast but not one technology, such as light rail, in particular.
"I'm not going to pre-empt what the best technology will be," Ms Simpson said.
"The main thing is about what do you want to achieve and what is the best way to achieve it?"
She noted the council was currently preparing a light rail business case for the State Government's consideration.
"A business case that doesn't lock in a particular technology is the best way to do this."
She said Bruce Highway upgrades and rail duplication were higher priorities among her colleagues.
"They are already ready to go and they are overdue."
"Its (rapid transport's) time has come but I think there have got to be discussions about what density people are comfortable with around that corridor."
She said density and infrastructure between Caloundra and Maroochydore were needed to make a rapid transport project "really fire".
