Council removes all doubt

GYMPIE Regional Council has done the right thing asking the Electoral Commission to provide the returning officer for the mayoral by-election.

The alternative is to have council CEO Bernard Smith perform the task.

With two sitting councillors among candidates to replace former mayor Ron Dyne, each representing very different views on the way the council should be run, it is hard to imagine any councillor not being caught up in the outcome.

When elected representatives are so clearly antagonistic towards each other, it is difficult enough being an objective CEO.

How much harder if the CEO and his role are election issues?

More difficult still if that same CEO is then expected to run the poll with the god-like objectivity we all expect.

The job goes to long- term election manager Ken Garner.
