Too late to enrol now

IF you have not enrolled to vote in the April 28 local government elections, then you have forfeited your right to vote because rolls closed at 5pm yesterday.

Enrolment and voting are compulsory for all eligible citizens.

However, if you are thinking of nominating to become an elected councillor, then you have from Saturday, March 10, until midday on Tuesday, March 27, to get your nomination in.

Pre-poll voting opens from 9am Monday, April 16, and closes 6pm Friday, April 27.

Applications for postal voting close 6pm Wednesday, April 25, and the cut-off date for return of postal ballot papers is 6pm Tuesday, May 8. Polling booths will open from 8am until 6pm on April 28.

Local governments that are divided into separate division elections will be conducted using the optional preferential voting system, and undivided local governments will use the first-past-the-post system.

Gympie Regional Council will, after this election, become a council with eight divisions.

Mayor Ron Dyne said he believed the council would be "far better off" had the election been in October so the budget could have been decided.
