Council offered land lease dream

GYMPIE Regional Council has been offered what might seem the deal of a lifetime, with an application to lease a Kilkivan paddock.

The agistment lease would apply to about four hectares of land at the corner of Pine Street and Mudlo Road, Kilkivan.

The proposed lease conditions would include $20 million worth of public liability insurance, maintenance of yards, fences and toilet and shower facilities on the site and an acceptance that others can use the land at no charge.

The land is a camping and water reserve under state law, meaning it can be used to feed and water animals and for camping, with most of its use expected to involve people using the Bicentennial National Trail.

The offer would save council at least $800 a year in toilet cleaning expenses, according to a report to council this week.

Because of a legal requirement that council call tenders before leasing any land, councillors resolved to call tenders for five-year leases on the site.
