Epic backyard caters for golf, bowling, handball, basketball

SINGLE parent Bec Mortensen has created an epic backyard at her Stenner St home to give her children the best playtime possible.

Ms Mortensen has three children with autism who like to play individual sports like golf, gymnastics and karate.

"It can be time consuming and expensive to get out to the driving range so I decided to build my own," she said.

"You can do anything with Google."

Ms Mortensen built a driving range that is also a basketball court with lawn to play tenpin bowling and handball.

"All school work and homework is on laptops these days, they even have to email in homework," she said.

"Kids are just encouraged to be in front of screens so I'm trying to get them off.

"When they come back from school they automatically reach out to the computer and it's just not good.

"Now they're outside, they don't raid the fridge straight after school either - they're keen to get out and have fun and they play until it's dark or the mozzies come out."

The best part is that the busy mum is only half way through her project.

She plans on incorporating a shooting range for NERF guns and will install a trampoline at Christmas time.

"When you have children with autism, they really need that stress relief after school; it burns off that energy, helps clear their mind and let's them relax and reset before they do homework," she said.

"So the backyard is really working because the whole idea was to get off the laptop."

Her children take after their mum and are all keen gardeners, so Ms Mortensen also built them a vegetable garden.

She started the project in May and worked through winter so the children could be outside as much as possible by spring.
