Coroner calls for awnings to be checked after QLD death

A QUEENSLAND Coroner has recommended all awnings on the state's coastline be inspected after an inquest into the death of a 54-year-old man on the Gold Coast.

Christopher Walton was walking along James St in Burleigh Heads when the awning covering the footpath at the front of a commercial building collapsed on him, News Corp reports.

This morning the Coroner found the awning's unusual construction, combined with its age and coastal location contributed to its failure.

He also recommended a state wide awning task-force be set to undertake state wide inspections.
