Cooloola Coast paddler up for Aussie champ

DRAGON BOAT: The sport of dragon boating dates back to 332 BC and is touted by some experts as one of the oldest sports in the world.

While Cooloola Coast Dragon Boat Club paddler Shane Berkhout is only 23years old, he is doing his best to keep the history alive.

Berkhout will represent Queensland this week at the Australian Dragon Boat Championships in Victoria.

As the youngest member of the Tin Can Bay-based club, Berkhout has been paddling for just three years, with his maiden Queensland jersey coming off the back of a solid state title campaign last month.

In a bid to improve his performance at the Australian titles, he has made the trip to Maroochydore twice a week to train with the Maroochydore Sea Serpents.

The national titles run until April 24.
