Contention as portfolios cause angst

THE new meeting system introduced to GRC should be abandoned and committees brought back, Cr Ian Petersen says.

The council replaced committees with portfolios after the election, and went from having seven meetings a month open to the public, to one meeting every three weeks.

Mayor Ron Dyne has defended the portfolios as more efficient and just as open and accountable as the committee system, but Cr Petersen disagrees.

"It's all very well to tell the community what we are doing but we should be showing them what we are doing," he said.

Cr Larry Friske also prefers committees.

"A strong committee system is the backbone of a council and I believe the existing (system) was one of the reasons GRC was able to handle the amalgamation issues and the flood disaster as well as we did."

Cr Rae Gate said she had enjoyed the old committee system but was "willing to give this new style of operation a fair go" before she makes any comments.

The rest of the councillors said they were happy with the new system. Crs Wayne Sachs and Mick Curran said it was an improvement.
