Google Earth Mystery X sparks wild theories

AHHH, online conspiracy theorists. Their meaningless pursuits keep us alive and vaguely interested on dull days.

People on the internet are now claiming someone at Google is attempting to point out a secret hidden beneath the ground in Antarctica.

In a video posted on Youtube channel Conspiracy Depot, the viewer is shown a mysterious 'X' that appears when the user turns on the weather setting in the display on Google Earth. "Looking through Google Earth tonight when I noticed a huge red X pointing to an area in Antarctica."

When you zoom in, it appears to be pointing directly to a particular point in Antarctica.

"Is it a glitch? Or is somebody at Google showing 'X marks the spot?'"

Well... DOES it mark the spot? And, uh, what exactly is the spot?

The clip doesn't offer up any motives for the mysterious spot, but suggests a rogue Google employee is trying to alert us to something. Buried treasure? Nuclear weapons? Alas, we may never know.

It comes just days after alien hunters claimed to have found evidence of a UFO on the continent.

A video showing a 160-feet long object on a glacier in South Georgia quickly went viral.

But as Forbes points out, Google Earth aerial photography showing deposits of a mass movement there - possibly a rockfall or an ice avalanche.

Still, it's sure fun to speculate.
