Commonwealth Games development begins
THE Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Village development is officially under way after the Parklands site was declared a priority development area.
The State Government will call for expressions of interest in April to find a development partner to deliver the village, with plans to begin preliminary infrastructure works by October.
Commonwealth Games Minister Jann Stuckey said the village would be a vital piece of infrastructure for 6500 athletes and officials during the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
But she said it would contribute also to the Gold Coast's longer term economic development.
"The site will include efficient transport networks that enable easy access to games venues and facilities adjoining the precinct, provide private and public open space for the area, and improve access to key amenities," she said.
"Once the Games are over, the permanent components of the games village will form the key residential, commercial and retail part of a major health and knowledge precinct for the Gold Coast, building on the key infrastructure and services already well under way in the area."
