COLUMN: Brady's Bounce - he talks about the NBL season

One of the best parts of having time off over the holiday period has been the ability to watch so many incredible NBL games.

In September, I was fortunate enough to provide in-game commentary to the live stream feed for the pre-season clash between Brisbane Bullets and Cairns Taipans at Central Queensland University in Rockhampton. The fan support on that night made a meaningless practice game feel like the deciding game of an NBL grand final series. Looking back, it was a first-hand insight into the product the league would produce for the 2017-18 season.

It continues to be noted, but our NBL is in a really positive place under the leadership of Larry Kestelman. The standard of play has been remarkable, but I have been most impressed with the fan fair that is following the sport again. I know a number of Basketball enthusiasts who now have an improved platform to cover the sport due to the following that is being generated. Some of those in my networks are the Long and Short Podcast, The Ruckus, Aussie Hoopla, Jordan Gerrans and Liam Santamaria.

Personally, I am happy to see that the league has engaged Corey 'Homicide' Williams in the capacity they have. Having a controversial figure, who is happy to voice an unedited opinion, is generating conversation. Homicide is happy to play the role of broadcasting villain, with the theory that "All publicity is good publicity". To be fair, I'm not even sure I understand the rationale behind the ever-changing top five lists, but they seem to be creating outstanding fan engagement and to Corey's credit, he is doing a great job of driving that. Homicide may well be the NBL's broadcasting version of John McEnroe!

As we move towards the business end of the NBL season, it is going to be another sprint to the finish for teams vying to make the top four. As a fan of the game, it will be great fun watching our favourite teams jockey for a play-off birth.

As the momentum keeps building in the NBL, it is exciting to envisage the opportunities that may be on the horizon in seasons to come!
