GYMPIE cricket's biggest rivalry this season between Harlequins and Colts served up another interesting chapter at the weekend.

Harlequins and Colts clashed on Saturday at Kozminksi Oval for the opening day of a two-day match before Colts seized the one-day final a day later at Albert Park.

Harlequins opened the batting and made a total of 123 from its first innings. In reply, Colts were in trouble having lost half its batting stocks to be sitting on a lowly 30.

Driving Harlequins' efforts behind the crease were middle-order batsman Brett Sorrell (33) and brother Craig (20).

Harlequins' top order faltered before the middle order fired up to restore respectability into the team's total.

Best with the ball for Colts was Anthony Smerdon whose rocket deliveries yielded five wickets from 15 overs, producing five maiden overs and conceding 35 runs.

Colts will be desperate to score quick runs when the game resumes this weekend to remain competitive.

Also at stake is the chance to get a mental edge ahead of Sunday's Gympie Cricket Association Sunshine Mitre 10 T-25 final between both sides. That final gets underway from 2pm at Albert Park with a hot contest expected.
