COMPETITION leaders Gold City Steering were pushed to the limit by cellar dwellers Budget Steel. Steels’ captain Neil “007” Hughes led by example with a comeback win over Mark Wilcox 9-5, 9-6, 7-9, 4-9, 9-3. Though Steering’s Jerome Smith won in four, opponent Jim Herbohn took an important game leaving Steels some hope.

Steels’ Tom O’Brien was also gallant in his loss to Mr Gadget Clayton Whincorp 4-9, 9-3, 2-9, 10-8, 5-9.

Despite being behind, Steels were not yet finished. The final rubber saw two combatants not prepared to concede defeat.

Steels’s Peter “Rocky” Elson eventually overcame Ralph Frankcom 4-9, 10-8, 9-1, 10-8. The night finished with both teams level on games and Steering just holding on for a 128-127 points victory.

Second placed Fisherman’s Haul netted a comfortable win over Gympie Graphics. The Fishermen pushed off with Dave Lawless punishing Stephen John Lahiff 9-1, 9-0, 9-1.

The Fisherman remained on course when Bruce Pearce over came Mal Goodgear 9-0, 1-9, 9-3, 9-1 followed by a focussed Ryan Gottke beating Toby Kraak 9-7, 9-5, 9-3. Bob Brook managed to a stave off a Fisherman’s clean sweep by defeating Kathy Paterson 9-6, 9-2, 7-9, 9-3. Graphics drop to fifth on the ladder.

Wide Bay Cabinets was stretched by Shepherds Retravision. Dennis Maher for Cabinets found some reserve fuel to over run Matt Robinson 8-10, 9-4, 4-9, 9-7, 7-3. Zac Lazarevski fell short in his loss to Shepherds Marcel the Magician Delgado 8-10, 4-9, 9-3, 9-0, 4-9. Shepherds continued once Michael Taiaroa finally woke up in his 7-9, 6-9, 9-5, 9-0, 9-0 win over Rhonda Keast.

Tony Kerr’s fitness pulled Cabinets out of the mire by beating Luke Kidd 9-0, 6-9, 9-7, 9-2. Cabinets up by 10 games to 9 and jump from fifth into the top four.

Salmon Builders’ victory over Case Accountants saw them soar to third on the ladder. Dean Hogget set the foundation for Builders by closing out Casey Ison 9-2, 9-7, 10-8. A rare forfeit gifted Builders the second rubber.

Dave Hogan revived the Accountants cause beating Mario Fazio (reserve) 2-9, 9-3, 8-10, 9-4, 9-5. Fazio then had to play up a row but was no match for sharp Accountant Gary Elson losing 1-9, 0-9, 4-9. Builders had done enough getting up 8 games to 6.
