Coleen just ‘gave it a go’

COLEEN Houghton was out in her garden in Gympie's Southside on Wednesday night, checking out her gerberas.

And you could say that the rest is Gympie Show history.

Coleen's bloom was named the Grand Champion Gerbera.

"I was just in the garden and I thought, 'I'll give it a go'.

"There was a gerbera that I liked the look of, so I cut it and took it in for the judging," she said.

Maybe it's something she does or maybe it's just excellent quality plant stock.

But Coleen says she's not planning to change a thing.

"We'll be keeping the bulbs from that one," she said.

"We do put plenty of manure on the garden though.

She picked the beautiful double gerbera during a walk in the garden about 6.30pm on Wednesday and took it in for the judging.

"I woke in the morning and I was the grower of the Grand Champion Gerbera.

"I'm not sure what we're doing right," she said at the Show this week.

"Whatever it is, I think we'll keep doing it.

"I like the garden.

"It's a lot of fun," she said.

"It's even more fun when you win a prize."
