Coal-fired power station causes political stoush

THE State and Federal governments have locked horns over the possibility of a coal-fired power station in north Queensland.

Federal Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Matt Canavan, said all options of power should be considered in the region, but questioned the State Government's refusal to consider coal.

"It seems absolutely strange that we would be exporting millions of tonnes of coal from north Queensland, but not at least consider using it for our own power needs," he said.

It comes as the Palaszczuk Government announced it would look to develop a business case for a hydro-electric power station at the Burdekin Falls Dam, suggesting it was more realistic and viable than the coal-fired power station.

While in Townsville at the weekend, the Premier said the project was "critical for the development of northern Australia".

But member for Whitsunday Jason Costigan labelled the announcement a "smokescreen" and questioned why the government doesn't "have the guts" to embrace a coal-fired power station.

"We want the lowest possible electricity prices," he said. "We are not getting it and we have all this black gold in our own backyard and we are not tapping into it.

"This latest announcement confirms what we already knew and that is they are not just going to mention the C word."
