Lucy Connolly breaks 14-year-old club record

GYMPIE Gold Fins swimmer Lucy Connolly's hard work in the pool paid off recently when she broke a 14-year-old club record.

Connolly broke the club 14 year's women's 100m backstroke record of 1.13.19, previously held by successful former Golf Fins swimmer Lauren Moore who set the record in 1999.

Connolly timed 1.12.64 while competing at the State Longcourse Championships at Chandler in Brisbane in late December.

The time was also a three-second personal best.

Connolly trains seven to eight times a week for up to two hours per session with coach Libby Manthey, who also coached Moore to her success.

Manthey said Connolly enjoyed getting in the pool for training and competition and always did well at whatever she decided to take on.

She said backstroke was quickly becoming Connolly's stroke of choice.

Connolly's record-breaking time is just two seconds off the time needed to qualify for the national longcourse championships in April.

Manthey said there's still time for Connolly to shave those two seconds off her time, saying it's certainly not an unreasonable goal for Connolly to have.

"She's coming into her own," Manthey said.

"I anticipate she'll do fairly well (to make the national qualifying times)."
