Club captain enjoys surf lifesaving's friendly appeal

BEING a part of Mackay's surf lifesaving community has been a triple treat for Rod Finney.

Mr Finney and his wife Trish joined the Mackay Surf Life Saving Club 12 years ago because they wanted their triplets - Alexander, Claudia and Jessica - to be involved in a healthy community activity.

Now the club captain, Mr Finney said he and his family have forged strong ties through their involvement.

"I would say it's fun and friendship," the 48-year-old school principal said of the best part of being a MSLSC member.

"The thing that lifesaving does is give you life-long friends.

"Wherever you go, throughout Australia, you just mention that you're from a surf lifesaving club and you're welcomed with open arms."

Saving lives and preventing tragedies are vital roles for the MSLSC's 160-plus members.

Last year, Mr Finney and his lifesaving colleagues completed 769 preventative actions to keep swimmers safe and performed first aid 23 times.

But keeping beach-goers safe costs money, which is why Mr Finney and other club members will be seeking donations during the Queensland-wide Surf Safe Appeal from Monday, October 24 to Sunday, October 30.

Mr Finney said he hoped the MSLSC would raise up to $20,000 and all money collected would help offset the organisation's running costs.

"It costs us well over $125,000 to run our club every year," he said.

"We don't have any major sponsors like we did before the downturn in mining.

"The money we raise will go towards keeping the club operating so we're available for the community."

Mr Finney said lifesavers would door-knock the region and collect donations at local shopping centres.
