Close call: brown snake strikes snake catcher in chest

A TOOWOOMBA snake catcher had a close call with an angry eastern brown snake.

Toowoomba Snake Catchers 24/7 Dave Wiedman was called out to capture the snake from a chook pen.

He posted a video online of him capturing the 1.7 metre snake.

The video has since had more than 2000 views.

After he brought the snake out of the pen, it slithered around angrily before striking Mr Wiedman in the chest.

"I was lucky because I was wearing a singlet under my shirt so he didn't hit my skin when he struck," he said.

"He was a good size. Not the biggest I've got but definitely not the smallest."

Mr Wiedman has captured 32 eastern brown snakes in the past two weeks, along with a range of other snakes and reptiles.

He said as the hot weather settled in people needed to clean their yards.

"People need to get their yards clean because there are so many areas for snakes to hide," he said.

"If you are gardening make sure you wear gloves and long pants and always have your phone on you.

"The minute it takes you to get your phone you will lose the snake.

"You need to keep a watch on it until I get there otherwise it will disappear."

There are fees for call outs. For more information search Toowoomba Snake Catchers 24/7 on Facebook.
