Claiming refunds

THE Federal Government announced in the 2012 budget that the education tax refund would be replaced by the new Schoolkids Bonus which started going into Gympie bank accounts last week.

The Australian Tax Office website says families cannot claim the ETR for expenses incurred in 2011-12, or any excess eligible expenses carried forward from the previous year.

The website says families are still able to claim the refund for the 2010-11 and earlier years, if they haven't done so.

Families and approved care organisations can claim up to 50% of their eligible educational expenses if they were entitled to receive family tax benefit Part A for the child or a payment was made for the child that stopped them from receiving FTB Part A for that child.

Independent students may also be eligible to claim the refund. Visit ato.gov.au.
