APRIL FOOLS: Chinese billionaire behind airport at Rosewood

A SECOND international airport to service the expanding south-east Queensland region is coming to Rosewood.

A private consortium including Chinese billionaire, Lee Chung Wi, is behind the concept and both the federal and state governments have given the project their initial support.

The new airport will be built along the lines of the ultra-modern Emirates A380 terminal in Dubai.

Regarded as the best airport in the world, designers of the Dubai project have already started initial drawings for the Rosewood plan.

Mr Wi said they had looked across Australia for the fastest growing district and discovered that Ipswich's population by 2031 would exceed more than 700,000.

"We have estimated the cost to be around $600 million for the first stage which will include the terminal building and two runways," he said.

With work planned to start on April 1, 2016 the airport would expect to see its first international carriers landing by 2018.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale has been in secret talks with Mr Wi in China for the past four months.

"This is exactly what Ipswich needs to progress with an estimated 2000 jobs coming along with the airport," he said.

"I have been told that the announcement by Mr Wi was timed to be on April 1, a date which is celebrated around the world as a day when the impossible becomes the possible."
