Gympie children's ward evacuated

GYMPIE Hospital’s children’s ward was evacuated on Monday night after staff noticed smoke moving into the area.

Three Queensland Fire and Rescue appliances from the Gympie station arrived at the hospital around 6pm.

Fire officers on the scene said they found ballast in a fluorescent light tube had caught fire, filling part of the ward with smoke.

The children’s ward remained closed while fire fighters checked the area and did air safety checks.

Queensland Health officials failed to respond to The Gympie Times by 5.30 yesterday afternoon about the cause of the fire and how many and how long the children were evacuated from the ward.
