Charities wrapped with $11k donation

CHRISTMAS gift wrapping may have started out as a small way to help a group of Gympie women raise money for local charities, but this year the group has raised $51,000 in the five years since it started.

The volunteers who wrap gifts at the Centro Shopping Centre are led by Lola Cass.

"Centro supplies all the paper and the site," she said.

With 68 volunteers ready to make decorations and wrap gifts, it seemed a breeze to make $11,870 last Christmas for the groups' three nominated charities, Little Haven Palliative Care, Community Bus and Project Linus.

Last year they handed over $12,000.

"It's very well supported by the local community and we'd like to thank everyone," Mrs Cass said this week at a morning tea held to present the cheque.

"The public keep coming back year after year. It's all thanks to our 68 volunteers and Centro."

The group will now spend the months leading up to Christmas making beautiful decorations for the gifts.

"Everyone does it willingly and lovingly."

Mrs Cass let The Gympie Times in on her secret to perfect gift wrapping: good quality paper, years of experience and lovely decorations.

She said even the four men that volunteered were "good at it".

Last year the group made 9000 decorations in the lead-up to Christmas.

Mrs Cass said she selected local charities to give the money to, so the dollars stayed in town and the group was helping people they knew.

"A few of our volunteers have some relative that has been treated in palliative care," she said of Little Haven which was one of the beneficiaries.

The group is always looking for donations of good quality ribbon. Phone Mrs Cass on 5482 2769.
