New Rugby League side scores wins

UP and coming junior Devils Jericho Jackson, Jacob Groundwater and Shaun Wilson have played integral roles in the newly formed Cental United Rugby League sides’ first wins.

Jackson and Groundwater play in the under 16 Central United side in the Cyril Connell Cup.

The team has recorded two wins, the first against Mackay Cutters 36-12 and the second against Central Queensland Comets 34-32.

Jackson has been impressing coaching staff with his hard work in the forwards while Groundwater’s grass cutting tackles have seen the back save certain tries.

Wilson has been playing in the under 18 United line up in the Mal Meninga Cup.

The ex- Sat Patrick’s College student scored a try in their 36-22 win against Mackay Cutters and put on a huge defensive display in the teams 16-12 win against the Comets.

Bronco’s Game Development Officer and Burnett Leagues Operation Manager Darren Burns said the United side was put together to give more country kids a pathway to Queensland selection.

He said Queensland Rugby League had now split the State into three divisions, Northern Southern and Central.

The new divisions meant a lot of country kids had to travel long distances either to the Sunshine Coast or Rockhampton to make representative teams.

Burns said the Wide Bay League put the Cental United initiative together to give kids in outlying areas a chance to be seen by State selectors without the expense of lots of travel.

He said the performances of the Gympie Devils players showed how Gympie juniors can match it with the best.

“It is the first time this team has ever been picked and by all accounts they have been playing really well,” Burns said.

“They played really well to get selected in the Central United side to start with and now they have been exposed to the next level of competition,” he said.

Another Gympie junior league product and state representative Jacob Harney has been playing for Sunshine Coast in the Southern Division competition.
