Cats' players suspended after on-field brawl

AUSSIE RULES: Two players from the Gympie Cats have received suspensions after a melee occurred in the Hervey Bay Bombers game two weeks ago.

The Bombers were on their way to giving the Cats a thumping when sparks flew and confusion engulfed the game two minutes before the final siren.

The Cats captain Lanze Magin received a 3-week suspension whilst Hayden Graham received a 2-week suspension.

Cats head coach Courtney Findlay said he was disappointed with the result but at the same time respected the judiciary's decision.

"Obviously we were disappointed with the decision, but we respect the judiciary and we will welcome them back into the fold in two and three weeks," he said.

"At this point in time we're having a well earned rest this week, we'll reset and refocus for next week's game against the Brothers.

AFL Wide Bay president Anthony Stothard said it was only the Gympie side who were reported in the melee.

"We only had reports that two Cat players were involved," Stothard said.

"We don't condone what happened and we're distraught and unhappy about it."

Hervey Bay Bombers coach Darren Hunter refused to be drawn on the incident, which marred a heavyweight battle between teams ranked second and third on the ladder and with similar records.

They entered with an identical win-loss record, and with one win each in two clashes earlier this season.

The Gympie Cats will enjoy a bye this weekend before going up against Bundaberg Brothers next Saturday at 3pm on the Ray Warren oval.
