Cats start 2016 with win against nemesis

AUSTRALIAN RULES: The Gympie Cats have started their 2016 premiership defence in the best possible way after beating arch rivals Maroochydore in a grand final rematch.

The cats came away from the game kicking a solid eight goals while Maroochydore could only manage four.

Cats coach Brent Forsyth told The Gympie Times recently that the conditions on the day were conducive to a high goal scoring game.

"Winning the first game of the year is obviously important," Forsyth said.

"The beauty of our competition is that there is time throughout the season to sharpen up."

The Cats have not been without their challenges so far this season with a number of key players from last year's campaign retiring or moving on from the club.

"We have had a little bit of turn over, but our roster is not too bad," Forsyth said.

However, the Cats will need every player on the same page this week if they are to continue their form when they take on Nambour away from home.

The Nambour side has recently returned into the competition and will be sure to provide the Cats with a test.
