Cate leads Aussie Golden Globes charge - see complete list

CATE Blanchett is flying the flag for Australia in the 2014 Golden Globe nominations, released overnight.

She is in the running for Best Actress in a motion picture, drama for her leading role in Blue Jasmine, but faces some stiff competition with Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench, Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet also in the category.

Blanchett is one step closer to an Oscar nomination after receiving nods in both the Golden Globes and SAG Awards for her moving performance in the Woody Allen drama.

American Hustle and 12 Years A Slave lead the nominations tally with seven nods each.

The Best Actor category is also highly competitive, with Tom Hanks, Matthew McConaughey, Robert Redford and Idris Elba facing off against 12 Years A Slave's rising star Chiwetel Ejofor.

Television dramas Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, The Good Wife, Masters of Sex and hit online series House of Cards are all in the running for Best TV series, while the New Zealand filmed Top of the Lake received two nominations.

The Best Actor in a TV series category is another highly contested award, with James Spader, Kevin Spacey, Bryan Cranston, Michael Sheen and Liev Schreiber all in the running.

The Golden Globes will be held on January 12 in Los Angeles and will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Nominations for the Academy Awards will be announced on January 16.
