A CAR has smashed into a CBD bus shelter, causing significant damage to the front of the car and leaving the bus shelter bench seat on the ground.

Emergency services were called to the incident in the carpark across from Target in Woongarra St about 10am.

The footpath was left showered in clear perspex, as a number of the panels shattered.
