ONE ON ONE Michael Plate

How has the season in Division 2 been going?

The team has been going very well but we have been lucky not to lose a few games. We only have one round left and play Beachmere who are among the top teams including Caboolture, Beerwah, Kawana and the Mary Valley Stags are not far behind.

Do you think the Devils will be crowned minor premiers and win the grand final?

It is hard to tell, everyone is close; it just depends how you turn up on the day.

Is this the first time you have captained a league team?

I have captained teams in school but this is my first year captaining a proper senior's team.

Do you have a lot of responsibilities as captain?

We have a lot of experienced players and do not really need anyone stirring the ship because everyone knows what they need to do. All I do is the toss at the start.

Would you want to move up in to A-grade one day and play for the Northern Outlaws?

I am happy playing in second division because it suits my lifestyle with work and university.

What has been your best moment while playing rugby league?

Hopefully it will be winning the grand final this year.

Have you previously made a grand final in league?

I have only played in one grand final in the Gympie under-15 team but we lost.

When did you first start playing rugby league?

I started playing in Gympie for under-10s but I originally wanted to play soccer with my friends but because I was a year older I was not able to play in the same grade so decided "stuff it I will play footy".

I grew up playing juniors in Gympie and when I moved away for university I played in the Brisbane competition.

I began playing back for Gympie last year when the club merged with the Noosa Pirates.

Who encouraged you to play rugby league?

My grandfather Todd Plate is a really big rugby league man and I grew up hearing stories about his days playing rugby league when Gympie was made up of four clubs Wanderers, Brothers, Rainbows and Suburbs.

What do you enjoy most about playing league?

I think the mateship and getting to make friendships that are tested on the field.

It is a unique friendship when playing rugby league with other people.
