OPINION: Candles a sign of community

THE Gympie Times has been running a campaign called I Love Gympie Region for about four months now.

The campaign was designed to highlight the great things about our amazing region and build social pride.

As part of the campaign we have asked people to don an I Love Gympie Region hat and have their photo taken outside of the region, spreading the message. Another part of the campaign is to take beautiful and uplifting photos of Gympie and post them on social media with the #ilovegympieregion hashtag.

Tuesday night on social media I witnessed something wonderful that galvanised my pride in the region. One by one, candles were posted on Facebook to support a family in need.

Our community spirit is second to none, but it's something that's behind the scenes; it's hard to promote or hashtag. Tragedy has once again brought out the best in us.

It's another reason I love the Gympie region.
