Premion cancer treatment at Coast

THE latest in cancer radiation treatment has arrived on the Sunshine Coast.

A new $2 million linear accelerator at Premion in Nambour allows specialists to provide cutting-edge treatment for patients with breast, prostate, lung and other cancers, according to leading radiation oncologist Dr Marcel Knesl.

The upgraded machine complements another linear accelerator already operating at the centre, boosting the centre’s capability and providing greater flexibility in patient treatment.

“Patients will benefit from being able to choose a treatment time more convenient to them, making the experience a little easier,” Dr Knesl said.

Since Premion opened in Nambour in 2001, more than 5200 cancer patients from the Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay, Bundaberg, Rockhampton and surrounding areas have been treated.

“These patients have been spared the cost and inconvenience of travelling to Brisbane with access to the latest technology in cancer treatment,” Dr Knesl said.

War veteran William Carree has been receiving treatment at Premion since January.

“It is so convenient receiving treatment in Nambour. If I wasn’t able to be treated here, I would have to travel to Brisbane every day which would place an extra burden on me,” Mr Carree said.
