A THIEF who stole a flashy mountain bike from an eight-year-old has been given an opportunity to return it before police close in.

The Wormwood bicycle was taken from a property at Heights Dr, near Old Maryborough Rd, sometime between Friday and Saturday morning.

The boy's mum, who did not want to be identified, said she saved all of her spare money to buy her son the bike for his eighth birthday.

She said she bought it online and it was unlike any other bike she had seen in Gympie.

Similar to the photo, the stolen bike is white with black and red trimmings, has 18 speed Shimano gears and suspension.

The single mum said two Wormwood bicycles, both with a retail value of about $500, had been leaning against the wall under the carport and only the one closest to the road was taken.

"I have not yet told him the bike is stolen," she said, afraid to upset the child.

"If he notices himself we will have to tell him. It was his birthday present. Don't believe it can be found so I will have to save some money and buy another one for him."

Gympie police asked for anyone with information on the stolen Wormwood mountain bike to come forward and help them find it for the boy.

Phone an officer on 5480 1111 or make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or Policelink on 131 444.

Anyone wishing to donate the boy a bicycle can contact The Gympie Times on 5480 4221.
