Campaign demands stronger sentence

MEMBER for Burnett Rob Messenger has tabled in Parliament a letter from the desperate mother of a child sex abuse victim, in an attempt to have the offender’s sentence lengthened.

Last month, John Gerard Greenalsh, 52, was sentenced in Bundaberg Magistrates Court to 10 months probation, and a two-month suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to two charges of sexually assaulting a teenage boy.

He was ordered to pay $500 compensation to his victim but was allowed to keep a blue card.

“My son will have to live with what has happened to him for the rest of his life,” the letter from the victim’s mother read.

The boy’s family wants to appeal, saying the sentence was a “slap on the wrist”.

“The victim’s mother asked that I table the document in parliament so her voice and warnings are heard, in hope that no other victims or families will have to suffer,” Mr Messenger said.

He made a notice of motion earlier this week, calling for the Attorney General Cameron Dick to be proactive, and refer the call for an appeal against Greenalsh’s sentence to the Queensland Police Service.

“It shouldn’t have to be up to the victim’s mother to appeal it - (Mr Dick) should refer it to the police minister,” Mr Messenger said.

“If he fails to do that, I will report it to the Police Commissioner myself.”

In a question on notice, Mr Messenger asked Mr Dick to detail the number of appeals his department has launched against child sex offenders and non child sex offenders, in the past five years.
