GoodGame Gympie: ABC show visits one-of-a-kind course

HIGH TIMES: Gympie High Year 11 and 12 Cert IV in Digital and Interactive Game students with Gus “Goose” Ronald, Peter Burns and Linjie Kong from ABC GoodGame.

GYMPIE High is home to a unique course of study, and is the only school in the entire country to offer the Certificate IV in Digital and Interactive Games.

Coupled with that, Gympie High is home to the Online College of Coding, and is one of only a small group of High Schools introducing the new ACARA Digital Technologies curriculum in 2016.

A school spokesman said Gympie High was truly leading the way when it came to teaching computer coding, including computer game programming, to the software engineers of the future. It was for this reason the TV crew from ABC's GoodGame made the trip from Sydney to talk to the students of Mr Brady's Certificate IV class.

Gus "Goose" Ronald and his camera and audio crew and producer spent two days in Gympie, including an entire day in the G Block Multimedia Computer Lab recording footage for an upcoming Goodgame segment.

They conducted in depth interviews with a number of students, including Malcolm Gablonski and Zach Nicoll who spoke to Goose about their programming and 3D modelling projects that they have worked on both at school and at home.

Eli Dowling also got a chance to be interviewed by the crew, who were very interested in the fact that Eli has chosen to come to Gympie High specifically to undertake these courses unique to the school.

Students got the chance to show the crew their game development project work, ranging from programming projects in Gamemaker, Adventure Game Studio and Unity, to 3D modelling projects in 3DStudioMax and Sculptris.

Many of the students managed to get autographs from the crew, including two lucky students who got their laptops signed.

At the end of the day, the class also made a short Youtube introduction piece with the ABC Crew that aired with GoodGamePocket on May 17. You can search for and view that episode on Youtube.

The school thanks the GoodGame crew for coming up to see the fine work being undertaken by the Gympie High students, and congratulates the fantastic effort by all students involved on the day.

The complete Goodgame and Spawnpoint episodes will air in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for those. A link to these episodes will be provided in an upcoming Gympie High newsletter article.
