Camels hoof it for Gympie's own Melbourne Cup race

GREEN lawns covered in marquees and punters swept down to the "dusty" sand at the Gympie Turf Club yesterday as about a thousand punters headed trackside for the 2013 Melbourne Cup Camel Races.

Elegance rubbed shoulders with smelly, recalcitrant dromedaries in a cultural mix that could only be seen and enjoyed in the country - and there is no better place in the country to experience the races than Gympie.

Cool temperatures and generous prize money drew a strong line-up in the Fashions of the Field, where florals, colour blocks and feminine frills prevailed.

The blokes didn't let the team down either, turning out in their suits and pin stripes - some really laired up - combining to create a fashionable buzz around Cup Day.

Thanks to the generosity of the Gympie Turf Club, Little Haven Palliative Care's coffers were well supported by at least two of the marquees and the sell-out luncheon in The Pavilion.
