Caloundra pensioner 'cheesed off' after caravan stolen

THEY only had a 30-minute window of opportunity, but brazen thieves seized the chance to make off with a caravan parked alongside a busy arterial road in Caloundra.

Owen Loft was dismayed on the morning of Easter Monday to find nothing but the lock in the Palm Village car park where he had displayed his caravan for sale.

The white Avan caravan, which he had up for sale for $20,500, had only been parked in a visitor space in the Caloundra Rd residential village for two days.

But locks on the doors and tow bar connection did not deter the thieves, who had broken them off, hitched up the caravan and taken off.

Mr Loft, 73, had been in Brisbane visiting his daughter, who is battling through her third bout of cancer, when he noticed the caravan missing upon his return home.

"I am a little bit cheesed off ... I could use stronger words," Mr Loft said.

"A neighbour behind me went out at 4am (Easter Monday) to get the paper and it was there then and one of the women went out to get her paper at 4.30am and by then it was gone.

"It would've taken two people to take it."

Although the caravan was insured, Mr Loft said there was about $2000 worth of equipment inside, including the TV, slow cookers, fry pans and bedding.

"You just had to put food inside and you were ready to go," he said.

"I parked it there with an Interested? sign on it as I thought it would get good exposure, but it was too good of an exposure.

"Someone wanted it alright, but they didn't want to pay for it."

The 73-year-old said he had put the caravan up for sale following a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

With the police unable to unearth any clues at this stage, Mr Loft is hopeful someone might have seen someone in the act or has information on the caravan's whereabouts.

The registration is 556QPJ and Mr Loft said the Avan model usually had cream wheels, but his had been painted "hammered grey" silver.
