IT WAS only meant to be an opportunity to rub shoulders with better-known artists, but surprise surprise, they got a gong.

Rockhampton's own music duo Busby Marou unexpectedly won the Blues and Roots Work of the Year award at the Australasian Performing Right Association Limited (APRA) awards night on Monday.

Speaking with The Morning Bulletin yesterday, Tom Busby said he was absolutely surprised when Busby Marou were announced the winners.

"I watched all the highlights and (looked at) photos from last year... I was thinking how cool it would be to go," he said.

Busby said when they were invited, he thought it would be a great opportunity to rub shoulders with the bigger names.

"I knew it was a big deal (APRA awards)," he said.

"I never expected to win.

"This is a really huge achievement."

Unfortunately, Jeremy Marou decided to spend time with family ahead of the duo's Australian tour, which kicks off in two weeks, instead of going to the awards night at the Sydney Convention Centre.

"I was ringing him all night," Busby said.

Busby Marou won the award for the emotive Biding My Time from the band's debut self-titled album.

Busby said he was also surprised by the comments from other artists.

"All the boys from Boy and Bear were really supportive," he said.

He said everyone was coming up to him and saying they love Busby Marou's album.

"It's good to know our songs reach not only the punters in the audience," Busby said.

He said he even got to chat to Gotye (Wally De Backer), who took out three awards on the night including Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Most Played Australian Work.

"I'm chuffed," Busby said.
