GYMPIE'S Beauty and the Geek television star Jason Newell joined his home community to help raise more than $5500 for Ronald McDonald House charities at Gympie McDonald's McHappy Day on Saturday.

With a large turnout, restaurant manager Brendan Papas said the store hit its $5000 target through onsite donations and the sale of helping hands and 800 big macs. Two dollars from each big mac sold was donated to the charity.

"The day was a great success. The team here went to a lot of effort and the community came out and were not shy to donate, so it was really good to see," Mr Papas said.

Other drawcards were a jumping castle, face painting and balloon animals for kids.
