Toowoomba North State School fire

Paramedics treat two students after school fire

UPDATE 11.20AM: Two students have been checked by Queensland Ambulance paramedics after a structure fire at Toowoomba North State School.

All school buildings were evacuated as Queensland Fire and Emergency Service crews doused a smouldering fire in the B Block roof believed to have been started by an electrical fault.

QFES station officer Tony Guse praised the school's swift evacuation and the actions of maintenance staff which stopped the spread of the fire.

"Thankfully the rapid action of their maintenance personnel that were actually able to quickly put an extinguisher on the fire and alleviate what could have been quite a big problem," he said.

"They have used a standard extinguisher (and have) actually broken in to the roof space to get to the root of the fire which was really well done and they have done everything right."

Mr Guse said the action of the staff helped prevent what could have been a serious incident.

"Those older timber structures with a common roof void do tend to get a go on and are really hard to control so his actions have saved a lot of inconvenience and problems later on," he said.

"We actually had structural embers burning and insulation as well and it appears to have been an electrical fault (which is) not all that surprising given the probably large power demand with the heater going on in there.

"I really can't praise his actions enough."

QFES crews remained on scene to dampen down hot spots and ensure the building was ventilated to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
