REBECCA Sommerfeld could be forgiven for underestimating just how quickly her son Isaac would make his way into the world.

Her first labour, for daughter Rianna, lasted 24 hours.

That is why the Glenvale resident and her husband James were shocked they didn't even have time to get out the front door for the birth of their second child.

Mrs Sommerfeld said she went to bed about midnight Sunday.

"I got a couple of pains but I didn't think anything of it so I just rolled over," Mrs Sommerfeld said.

The pains continued so she got up to go to the bathroom.

Then her water broke.

"I was very surprised.

"My husband has gone 'we'll go to the hospital'.

"I said 'there is no time for the hospital'."

Mr Sommerfeld was on the phone to an ambulance officer who told him to get his wife lying down.

"He said if they (paramedics) didn't come (fast enough) they would run me through what to do to deliver the baby." Mr Sommerfeld said.

"That's why I was hoping they would get there pretty fast."

Paramedics did arrive in time and delivered baby Isaac in his parent's bed at 1.25am Monday.

His due date was today.

He weighed 4.54kg or 10 pounds neat in the old scale.

Mrs Sommerfeld was grateful for the paramedics' skill and kind nature.

"They were such lovely people."
