POLICE are searching for a brutal gang of thugs who last night bashed a NSW man so badly that he is in hospital with head and face injuries.

Lake Macquarie Local Area Command police officers have established a crime scene at the victim's home in Lake Macquarie.

About 10.30pm last night, the 49-year-old victim walked outside of his house to find three men.

One of the trio used an extendable baton to bash the victim who fell to the ground.

The other men then attacked him before leaving the scene in a white sedan.

Police said the man was taken to John Hunter Hospital with arm, neck and facial injuries.

"As part of their inquiries, police would like to speak to three men, described only as being of a large build, who may be able to assist them," NSW Police said in a statement.

"Anyone with information is urged to come forward." - ARM NEWSDESK
