Roadside trailer check cost elderly woman her life

AN ELDERLY woman has been killed in a freak accident after stopping to check on a boat trailer beside the Bruce Hwy.

Police said they believed the 74-year-old and her husband had stopped to check on the trailer near Cooroy just before dawn yesterday when they were hit by a car driven by a 20-year-old man.

Police are investigating whether driver fatigue played a role in the crash.

The woman died at the scene and her 73-year-old husband was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Police said the tragic accident happened about 4.45am.

The couple was travelling north and had stopped on the side of the ride when they were struck by a silver sedan heading in the same direction.

They were apparently parked safely on the shoulder of the road and were believed to have left their vehicle to check on the trailer.

The young driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries but remained in hospital under observation last night.

The accident is being investigating by the Forensic Crash Unit.

Police were last night not releasing details on whether the elderly couple were locals or passing through the district.
