Browne and Briggs to battle for WBA title

BOXING: Queensland powerhouse Lucas Browne has got his wish and been lined up to fight veteran American Shannon Briggs for the vacant WBA world heavyweight title.

A date for the bout has not yet been determined.

"Briggs is a big man with a big punch and it's going to be a great fight,” said Browne, 37, who is now based in Perth. "Let's hope it's here in Australia.”

Briggs, 44, famously beat George Foreman in 1997 and rocked Lennox Lewis the following year in a world title fight before being stopped. Eight of his last nine fights have been knockout victories.

Briggs took to social media to announce that the WBA had ordered him to give Browne "a beatdown”.

In March, Browne made history by becoming the first Australian to win a world heavyweight championship when beating Ruslan Chagaev for the WBA (Regular) belt in Russia. But he was later stripped of the title due to a failed drug test.

He is unbeaten in 24 fights and has scored 21 KOs - one of the best ratios for any heavyweight ever.
