Bronwyn Bishop on probation: Tony Abbott

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has put Bronwyn Bishop "on probation" after it was revealed she spent more than $800,000 on taxpayer-funded expenses last year.

Mrs Bishop's post in the Speaker's chair is in jeopardy, with Labor preparing to move a motion of no confidence when Federal Parliament resumes on August 10.

The NSW MP came under fire when media learnt she spent more than $5000 on a helicopter ride to a Liberal Party fundraiser last year.

She has since admitted to a second chopper flight to another party fundraiser, just five days later, along with an $88,000 taxpayer-funded work trip around Europe.

She spent about $1000 a day on limousines over the two-week journey.

Mrs Bishop racked up an $811,857 expenses bill last year.

Mr Abbott said she had "copped a justifiable hiding" over her "serious error of judgment".

"She does have my confidence but like everyone who has done something like this, inevitably for a period of time they're on probation," he said.

"I can really understand why people are unhappy about this. Frankly, I'm unhappy about it as well."

What should happen to Bronwyn Bishop?

Any no-confidence motion is unlikely to succeed in Federal Parliament, where the Coalition holds a large majority.

But it will require the government to state outright its support for the besieged Speaker.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, who has faced recent criticism for failing to declare a $40,000 donation for a campaign director in 2007, said the Prime Minister needed to tell Mrs Bishop "it's time to go".

"The way that Mr Abbott has reacted since the public discovery of this flagrant abuse shows the Liberals are just out of touch with community standards," he said.
