Brilliant Lyon spins NSW to cup title

CRICKET: Nathan Lyon has had the perfect warm-up for the upcoming Test series with South Africa after a record-breaking performance for New South Wales as it defended its Matador Cup title.

Lyon (pictured), who was surprisingly dropped for the elimination final win over Victoria on Friday, responded in style in yesterday's final against Queensland at North Sydney Oval, taking 4-10 from his 10 overs, including three maidens.

His magnificent spell reduced the Bulls to 7-110 at one stage.

The Queenslanders recovered to post a total of 186 but despite a wobble at the top of the order, NSW claimed its 11th one-day cup crown, reaching 4-188 with 6.5 overs remaining.

Lyon's figures were the most economical figures for 10 overs in NSW's history, beating the previous record of 1-12 by Nathan Bracken a decade ago.

It was also the fewest runs conceded while taking four wickets, beating Glenn McGrath's previous state record of 4-17 in 1993-94.

The Blues stumbled to 3-19 with Michael Neser's three wickets giving Queensland hope.

But a partnership of 131 between skipper Moises Henriques (85 from 103 balls) and Kurtis Patterson (77 not out from 119) eased NSW to victory.

Earlier Queensland captain Usman Khawaja top-scored with 35 but he was one of Lyon's four victims as the Bulls lost wickets at regular intervals.

The two sides meet again at the Gabba tomorrow when the Sheffield Shield season gets under way with a day-night pink-ball game.
