Bridge upgrade urged

TUCHEKOI residents have urged authorities to upgrade Chinaman's Creek bridge on Skyring Creek Rd before somebody is killed there.

A petition submitted to Gympie Regional Council's works committee yesterday said "every week there are new sets of rubber tyre marks left on the bitumen from trucks and cars stopping just in time before an accident".

"The bridge may have been suitable many years ago, but with the increased amount and weight of the current traffic load, it most definitely is not suitable anymore," it said.

"This is just not good enough and we call for something more substantial to be done before there is a tragedy on this bridge."

Engineering services director Bob Fredman said Skying Creek Rd was a declared road and the petition should be answered by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

"There is no doubt however that the Chinaman's Creek bridge is a problematic structure in many respects," he said.

"As a matter of interest, there is potentially going to be a reduction in traffic on Skyring Creek Rd as a consequence of the new Bruce Hwy."

The petition will be sent to DTMR.
