Bribie Island boys in thick of Broncos' grand final action

RUGBY LEAGUE: Bribie Island duo Jack Reed and Matt Gillett came agonisingly short of an NRL premiership in Sydney last night but the former Sunshine Coast footballers certainly made their presence felt in the 17-16 grand final loss to North Queensland.

Centre Reed was among the Broncos' best despite playing injured. The 27-year-old was a force in defence, making 17 tackles, including a couple of crucial ones in the second half, and missing none.

He also scored a try off the back of a Gillett run and he also set up a four-pointer for winger Corey Oates on the left edge.

Meanwhile, backrower Gillett made a costly error early in proceedings but the 27-year-old bounced back with some strong defence. He also paved the way for Reed's first-half try. He pounced on a loose ball and stormed towards the line before passing to his good mate who crossed in a play which would have had Bribie locals on their feet.

The Australian and Queensland representative made 101m from 11 runs and amassed 41 tackles, missing two.
