Breastfeeding mum on naturopath's diet starved her baby

A BREASTFEEDING mother who took on a "water-only" diet has faced court after her baby almost died of starvation while the mum was following the orders of a naturopath.

The raw food diet which later became "water only" meant her 18-month-old was left starving, according to the Daily Mail.

He had been vomiting for four days and was understood to be days away from death when she sought medical attention for him.

The baby's eczema she was attempting to treat only became worse, as the infant scratched at his skin.

Her family noticed the child had lost weight, which was as low 6.5kg, and told the woman to stop her diet, but she refused.

The 33-year-old -- a midwife at a Sydney hospital -- was given a 14-month good behaviour bond when she appeared in court on Wednesday.

The court also lifted an apprehended violence order that kept the woman from seeing her son unsupervised since he was taken to hospital in May 2015.

"The case against the defendant demonstrates a serious example against her training and against the telltale signs which would have been blindingly obvious to anyone, Magistrate Ian Guy said.

"I accept she was following advice. That does not mean that she was somehow seduced, tranced into blindly following."

"Had he not presented at hospital at that time, he would have died within days."

The mother's legal team blamed her naturopath Marilyn Bodnar.

Ms Bodnar is expected to face trial next week, charged with reckless grievous bodily harm and aiding the failure to provide care to a child.
