Breakout year earns Ricciardo Laureus award

'THE Smiling Assassin' - Daniel Ricciardo - became the first Australian in five years to win a prestigious Laureus Sports Award.

The 25-year-old was honoured for his stellar debut season with F1 team Red Bull Racing in 2014, in which he claimed three grand prix victories and finished third in the championship.

"When I retire, I'll sit back and realise what the hell just happened," he (pictured) said yesterday.

Aussie skateboarder Oliver Percovich was recognised with the Sport for Good award. Percovich founded Skateistan in 2007 - a group that helps improve the lives of youngsters in Afghanistan through skateboarding.

It has since built a school and indoor skate park in Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif, and has also funded construction of an indoor skate park in Cambodia.

Tennis ace Novak Djokovic and Ethiopian athlete Genzebe Dibaba were named the Laureus sportsman and woman of the year.
