EMERGENCY services are cleaning up the scene of a three-car head-on crash near Mt Larcom school, after an SUV clipped a car and then crashed head on with the car behind.

Paramedics treated patients on scene; one patient in a critical condition was airlifted to the Rockhampton Base Hospital.

It is believed a Holden utility was travelling from Rockhampton along the Bruce Hwy towards Mt Larcom and the small brown SUV in the incoming lane clipped the Holden's side.

The SUV then crashed head on with a Ford territory car behind the Holden.

It is believed the group of five travelling in the SUV are tourists, with suitcases strewn all over the road.

Reports indicate injuries of the patients include head injuries, facial injuries, chest injuries and leg injuries.

It is believed that most of the people are in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

Reports indicate one male in his 30s has sustained head and chest injuries, another in his 20s has sustained chest injuries and a third male in his 30s has sustained facial injuries.

It is believed a female in her 20s has head and facial injuries and a man in his 40s has leg injuries.

The crash is 2km south of Mt Larcom near the Gladstone turn off.

Owner of Mt Larcom cafe Julie Beel said she heard a "mighty thud" and a loud bang, and ran to see what had happened.

"From my front door I saw a semi trailer reversing and then I saw all of the cars," she said.

"Then it all happened."

Police are diverting traffic in the north-bound lane through town and will be closing the Bruce highway in both directions.

Emergency services are currently cleaning debris off the road, however the cars will remain for police investigations.

Gladstone Police Inspector Darren Somerville urged drivers to be well-rested and remember the fatal five; speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear a seatbelt and driving while fatigued.
